TRANSFER GEARBOX AND PROPSHAFTS
|
AL.AGB 8 Two Speed Transfer Gearbox. Ratio 1 to 1 and
1.75 to 1. Front axle drive engagement under driver’s
control. Hi-Lo Ratio change and front axle engagement
are actuated by pneumatic cylinders, and these are
controlled by cab dashboard mounted switches operating
solenoid air valves.
The transfer gearbox is separately mounted to the frame,
and the drive from the gearbox is taken by a short
prop-shaft connecting the output flange of the gearbox
and the input flange of the transfer case. Prop-shafts
take the drive from the transfer gearbox to each axle.
Model R145. Single Reduction Axles. Ratio is 6.83 to 1.
Reduction is by hypoid gearing. The rear axle is
available as standard with an air actuated cross lock.
This is pneumatically actuated and controlled by a
dashboard mounted switch operating a solenoid air valve.
The front axle incorporates a double
universal joint on the pivot centre, giving constant
velocity to the road wheels on a turn, and hence an
absence of vibration. Maximum inner lock angle is 36°.
FRONT AXLE ENGAGEMENT AND DIFFERENTIAL
LOCKS
|
The
front axle engagement and differential locking is
controlled by two switches:
1. Front axle drive engagement
2. Cross differential lock in rear
axle.
In addition dashboard mounted switches control transfer
case ratio change (high or low ratio). The front axle
drive must be engaged before Transfer Gearbox Low Ratio
is engaged.
Standard
tyres are 14.00 X 20 cross country. Non directional
tread pattern. Rims are 9.00 X 20 Steel three piece
rims.
Wheel rim fitting to axle hub is 10 stud, M22 on a 335
mm pitch circle diameter. These are spigot mounted
wheels locating on a nominal 281 mm diameter spigot (ISO
Standard).
The
vehicle is fitted with a spare wheel carrier. This is
rear of cab situated, and is operated by a chassis frame
mounted worm drive manual winch.
Forward Control cab, two man seating, Sleeper berth cab,
left hand drive.
This
is a steel pressed cab incorporating box section
strengthening members, and fully treated against
corrosion by electro dip paint and wax injection. It
incorporates a rear sleeper berth, and a roof hatch. The
rear sleeper berth may also be used as two additional
seating positions if required. A tool box is mounted
under the sleeper berth. A cab heating and demisting
system is also incorporated. The front access panel and
grill are steel.
The
cab is fitted with a sprung adjustable driver’s seat and
co-driver’s (commander’s) seat. The roof hatch is
centrally placed and there is a standing position on the
engine tunnel allowing observation through the roof
hatch.
The
cab is fully trimmed inside to a high standard, and is
fitted with clips and stowage space for the crew’s
personal weapons. Easily cleaned moulded rubber non-slip
flooring is used.
The
cab tilts to allow service access to the engine. Cab
tilting is accomplished by a hydraulic tilt mechanism
powered by a chassis mounted handpump. The cab is
mounted on flexible rubber front mounts, and rear
spring-damper units.
The
front screen is laminated glass and the side and rear
screens are toughened glass. The cab is fitted with two
windscreen wipers, and these are selectable two speed
and intermittent wipe. An electric screen wash system is
fitted. Two large rear view mirrors are fitted, and a
small convex ‘kerb-view’ mirror is also fitted for
safety in urban traffic. A horn is also fitted. The cab
has a roof mounted interior light, and an additional
‘map reading’ light.

wide. Reinforced crossmember for rear towing. Cast
spring hangers. All-bolted construction allowing easy
field repair. Steel front bumper bar.
Steel
multileaf springs, with double acting telescopic dampers
on each axle. Long travel suspension giving a
comfortable ride over the worst terrain. Rubber bump
stops on both axles.
Hydraulic power
assisted steering unit, with
power steering pump driven
from the engine.
Ratio
is 20.2 to 1. Upper steering column (inside cab) is
attached by a universal joint, and is adjustable. The
steering wheel diameter is 503 mm.
The vehicle is available as
right
hand drive and Leff hand drive.
All
steel cargo body, incorporating a flat floor, a
droppable tailboard with access steps, and two
dropsides on each side. The dropsides may be removed,
and also the side and rear pillars, giving a large flat
floor area for the transportation of large objects.
Full
length drop-down seating is provided, and this may also
be removed as required.
A
steel removable tubular framework is provided, on which
a tilt (body cover) may be fitted.
Full
air brake split system with spring actuated park brakes
acting on the rear axle.
The
spring actuated park brakes give a true dynamic
emergency brake capable of stopping the vehicle from
speed.
The
system is fitted with an air dryer, which removes
atmospheric moisture to the air used in the system. This
reduces corrosion and greatly increases the brake valve
life. Thermoplastic brake pipes are used.
Drum
Brakes are fitted to both axles, with an inside diameter
of 381 mm on the front axle, and 394 mm on the rear
axle. The lining width is 178 mm on both front axle and
rear axle, and non-asbestos linings are fitted. Front
brake actuation is by wedge, rear is S-Cam.
The
vehicle is fitted with rear towing connections. Standard
connections are NATO ‘pressure apply’ type.
An
‘Exhaust Brake’ is fitted to the engine. This increases
the engine braking and helps to control the vehicle
speed on long descents, and increases the life of the
brake linings.
24 Volt Electrical
System, using waterproof components below the vehicle
wade line. The system is suppressed against Radio
Interference.
The
vehicle uses a 55 amp capacity alternator. Two 12v
batteries are fitted with 120 Amp.Hr capacity.
Black-out/Convoy lighting is provided in the standard
vehicle build condition. Exterior lights include:
headlamps, tail lights, brake lights and front and rear
turn indicators, side repeater indicator. All main
lights are protected from stones by grills.
The
vehicle is fitted with a battery disconnect switch.
Vehicle standard equipment not previously mentioned
includes:
Ø
2
Fuel Tanks, each 160 litres capacity, with two-way
change over manual switch (feed and return lines). This
gives more than 1400 Km on-highway range. The Fuel tanks
are fitted with lockable caps, water separator and fuel
filters.
Ø
Lockable chassis mounted toolbox containing a full set
of vehicle tools, a 8 Tonne capacity jack and wheel
brace.
